Through a textual and visual essay that touches upon architectural excavation, medieval timber frames, colour archaeology, rural shadows, carpentry traditions and abandoned tools, Driftwoods reflects on the relations between local wooden architecture and the landscapes that supply their materials. Layering international with personal perspectives, Lunenburg introduces us to the seemingly disappearing knowledge and traditions that still shape the landscapes and houses we inhabit.In an assemblage of various papers, inks and typography, the book embraces the notion of ‘driftwood’ as artistic framework, bundling washed-up historical references, personal observations and finished artworks that appear simultaneously adrift and fixated, decayed and restored, found and created. view at the Salvation Army, Oudezijds Achterburgwal 45, as part of the Warmoes Biënnale (Amsterdam, NL)&nbsp; Catalogue text Warmoes Biënnale Bart Lunenburg is developing Oever for the Dutch Salvation Army: a series of two-dimensional wall sculptures made of wood. The works are based on the idea that buildings carry a memory, shaped by what happens above ground and below ground. In the Red Light District, that memory is literally layered: houses are built on top of each other, resting on the oldest foundations of the city. The title Oever refers to the importance of wood as a building material for Amsterdam, a city situated along the Amstel and IJ rivers and the marshland on which it was founded. Beneath the city’s buildings lies a wet, unstable landscape. Bart sees the millions of wooden piles and the archaeological layers of wooden house structures as silent witnesses to care, shelter, and history. The Salvation Army, as a place of refuge and social engagement, forms a junction here where architecture, the ground, and human action come together. <img width="1000" height="1500" width_o="1000" (2026) is an attempt to connect this inspiring workspace, steeped in history, which was left virtually intact after the sale of the farm complex, with the sculptural studies I developed during my artist residency at this location. I was curious to see how I could relate the clay floors, the weathered roof beams, the bricks baked by the farmer himself — objects that bear witness to a life that has been connected to the surrounding landscape for generations — to my own wooden models and objects. In the series of photographs, smoothly sanded and oiled wooden surfaces alternate with the fire- and woodworm-damaged wooden beams of the barn and the weathered paintwork of the farmhouse. For me, the series is an attempt, both as an artist and as a temporary guest, to use the materials of this place to connect with the users of the building who preceded me here A vanished staircase, a burnt roof, a deep blue hue hidden under a thick layer of lime, the shadow of one ladder over another. They form both a concrete reason for new work and a representation of the lives and stories that were probably never recorded in archives. /> Press text The sound of night falling in the other room is a solo exhibition by Bart Lunenburg at Galerie Caroline O’Breen, featuring new photographs, sculptures and a new research publication that weave together diverse European timber traditions and hidden wooden constructions in contemporary cityscapes. One of the series on view is Oever (2025-26), in which Lunenburg examines the accumulation of building layers underneath the houses in Amsterdam's oldest streets. These originally medieval wooden houses had to be demolished and rebuilt over time because they sank into the marshy peat. The foundations of one house remained to serve as a support for the next and - together with millions of wooden stilts - they are still forming the foundations for daily life in the city. The intertwined structures of oakwood in this series form a sculptural interpretation of the first medieval wooden houses on the banks of the Amstel River, and are a testimony to these many ‘houses in houses’ that Amsterdam buildings carry within themselves.&nbsp; In his recent research project, Lunenburg followed the waters of the Amstel River all the way upstream. Through the historical phenomenon of the ‘Rheinflößerei’ or ‘Holländerfloße’ (the timber trade network dating from the late Middle Ages, in which hundreds of meters of long wooden rafts supplied various Dutch cities with wood via the rivers) he draws connections between the construction of Amsterdam's historic city centre to his recent artist-in-residency at Weilermattes in the German countryside. In the photo series Nocturnes (2026), created during his residency, models and sculptures built by the artist merge into the theatrical darkness of the vernacular architecture in the rural Rhineland-Pfalz. A vanished staircase, a burnt roof, a deep blue hue hidden under a thick layer of lime, the shadow of one ladder over another. The series artistically explores local carpentry traditions, the changing uses of the rural landscape, and rituals surrounding German timber architecture. &nbsp; By weaving together building traditions, symbols, and ecological elements from both rural and urban history, in the city of Amsterdam and in forested areas of Europe, Lunenburg aims to demonstrate the diversity of origins among its inhabitants and the materials used in the city's construction. &nbsp;On the occasion of his solo exhibition, the new research publication Drijfwoud (Driftwoods) (published by Soft concern hard concern, 2026) will be launched, featuring an essay by Lunenburg, reference materials, and new works. New works from this exhibition will simultaneously be on view at 'Stairway to? - stairs and ladders' at Kunsthal KAdE (Amersfoort, NL) 30.01-10.05.26 and the Warmoes Biënnale (Amsterdam, NL) The woven structures of these farmhouses are filled with incantations, rituals, and symbols intended to protect residents from storms, lightning strikes, diseases and other external threats. At the same time, the work is an attempt to protect the estate from increasingly severe weather conditions. A historical home-protecting symbol like the thunderbroom thus gains a sculptural presence and renewed meaning in our daily lives. Donder was created after winning the Stichting Vrederijk Kunstprijsvraag 2025 (Vrederijk Foundation Art Award 2025) at Landgoed Vrederijk in Loenen a/d Vecht (The Netherlands). This traditional Japanese woodworking technique preserves the wood, making it fire-resistant and protecting it from the elements. Bart his artistic practice revolves around the memory of buildings, craftsmanship, and our collective history. The Carpenter is part of his ongoing research project Jaarringen. This project explores the rich tradition of historical timber construction within Amsterdam’s ever-changing urban landscape. For his exhibition at Galerie De Schans, he transforms the space into a workshop, where sculptures, photographs and installations serve as tangible reconstructions of his studio. With a keen eye for detail and craftsmanship, Lunenburg examines how material, form, and history influence one another, and how wood, as a building material, carries both physical and cultural significance. Windows Should Be White and Clean (2024), I connect the supposed last words of the architect on his deathbed to the dying trees in Tivoli Park that were cut down during my residency in the city. The series shows an abstracted version of the white windows of Plečnik’s Zacherlhaus (Vienna, 1903−1905), photographed on the freshly exposed cross-sections of the tree trunks in the city park. The windows in the series are derived from the construction drawings for the Zacherlhaus, which was yet to be built. Johann Zacherl (1814−1888), Plečnik’s client for Zacherlhaus, made his fortune with Zacherlin: an insecticide that promised the total eradication of insects and fungi. The trees in Tivoli Park in Ljubljana are home to unique fungi and insects that inhabit the specific types of wood that grow there. Many felled trees are left on the forest floor because they provide a unique habitat for rare beetle species, such as the desert beetle, which can only survive in the trunks of dead, fallen, or felled trees.&nbsp; The moon-shaped segments that are sawn and taken out of the treetrunks cause the shadow of the windows to bend into strange angles. They give each image’s serially photographed window a different, alienating, sculptural new appearance. The works investigate the mysterious quality of the architect's last words and test the human geometry of architecture against non-human, organic, and cyclical nature. The final photos are framed in wood from spalted beech trees. Spalting in wood is the process by which graphic, black drawings or other discolourations appear on tree trunks due to mycelia (mushrooms) that mark the beginning of rot. These ‘green columns’, like the classical columns the architect preferred to incorporate in almost all his designs, reinforce the historical sight lines designed by Plečnik. At the same time, Plečnik used the same trees to hide buildings that did not fit into his Gesamtkunstwerk Ljubljana - and which the municipality did not allow him to demolish – from the public eye. For example, the architect had a row of poplars planted right around the Church of St. James on Levstikov trg Square, designed by the same architect, Jeblinger, in an attempt to camouflage it out of sight. This formed the basis for Guidelines (2024), an installation in which I play with camouflage, concealment, shadow, and overlapping elements and in which poplar and plane wood constructions merge into their own and each other's shadow. The abstract sculptural constructions are derived from Plečnik's wooden drawing tools and are made from wood of tree species favoured by the architect. I find it interesting to consider how drawing, building, and creating can contain a certain degree of aggression.
