Room without Residents
(1888 - 2020)
Installation with 216 scale models of school benches
Stained popular multiplex and pinewood, 250 x 422 x 9 cm

White walls of the exhibition spaces of Casco Art Institute and FOTODOK conceal the building’s past functions - these used to be classrooms. According to governmental regulations for school furniture from 1879, a maximum of 216 school desks could fit across the entire building. This very hall could offer space for 48 students.

Reminding of pews in a church, the identical counters speak to uniformity and standardization
of education. Considering that in 1929 the school turned into a Roman-Catholic L.O.M., a school for children with special needs, the following question comes to mind: in such a room, is there room for singularity and uniqueness?
