Garment Studies are a series of sculptures prior to Garment (after Dom Hans van der Laan), 2022

Even the tiniest of architectural details can reflect the ideals of the architect and can dictate certain 'orders'. The brass wood screws in the sculpture are a testimony to the tension between designing and building. These screws refer to a conflict between architect Jan de Jong and the carpenters of the former monastery. The architect demanded that all the thousands of screws in the monastery be aligned and placed vertically, whereas the carpenters tried to be resistant to this redundancy of work.

These aligned screws hold together the individual wooden scraps that originate from the original wardrobes of the Sisters; referring to the individuality of a Sister in the absolute system of the monastery and Dom Hans van der Laan's 'Plastic Number', as well as to one of the few textiles that were allowed in the monastery: the habit.
