Donder (2025)
Sculpture
320 x 350 x 350cm
Oiled solid oak wood
The hourglass patterns in the work represent three ‘donderbezems’ (thunderbrooms), a historical symbol found on roofs, wall anchors, and brickwork of largely demolished rural timber constructions and farmhouses in the Netherlands. The woven structures of these farmhouses are filled with incantations, rituals, and symbols intended to protect residents from storms, lightning strikes, diseases and other external threats.
At the same time, the work is an attempt to protect the estate from increasingly severe weather conditions. A historical home-protecting symbol like the thunderbroom thus gains a sculptural presence and renewed meaning in our daily lives.
Donder was created after winning the Stichting Vrederijk Kunstprijsvraag 2025 (Vrederijk Foundation Art Award 2025) at Landgoed Vrederijk in Loenen a/d Vecht (The Netherlands).
